FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE …

Hi there! The New Contemporary Blog of VIENNAFAIR has invited me to inform you about Moscow’s contemporary art life on a weekly basis. So I am really happy to have the opportunity to tell you about the most exciting and promising art place out there: Russia. It’s due time that more art lovers and collectors get a picture of what is actually going on here.

Maybe you think Russian art is “avant-garde”, maybe a little bit of Soviet monumentality and nowadays a little bit more actionist, the movement that “we in the West had ages ago” – that’s it? I assure you that it is NOT! I am lucky to have been able to work exclusively in the art world here for just a mere four years now, at the Austrian Cultural Forum in Moscow, and I can assure you that NOW there is a talented young generation of free, dynamic creative people here who will not only push Russia forward but will sooner or later attract the attention of the international art scene and their artistic work will claim its place at the top.

I will write for you from the studios, meetings with friends, and send you links and photos of what I get to see here.

Watch out for creative potential

So watch out for the creative potential of this place – and not only in Russia’s capital. The first pic I send you is simply a photo out of my window shot by a talented photographer working for an interiors and design magazine in Russia. On the window sill is a “greeting” dog sculpture by a young talented artist from Siberia who I met down there in Krasnoyarsk (where the first Biennale of Contemporary Art in Russia ever was taking place).

The plastic dog had a lot of brothers and sisters and was part of an outdoor installation around a bronze monument for a great 19th-century Russian artist. It looked amazing and it was quite funny to see this serious guy surrounded by countless of these cute dogs, standing and lying around him raising hands to him. Well, the generous young creator of this installation A. Beswershuk offered me one of these great dogs and it found it’s new home on my window sill. Unfortunately, I did not meet the young lady again; she had an exhibition at START Project at Winzawod (a non-commercial exhibition space with monthly shows of Russian artists http://projectstart.ru/) but I missed her. Hope I see her again at this year’s Siberian Biennale. Highly recommended to go there!
X. Krasnoyarsk Biennale should be this year, a GREAT possibility to get in contact with Russian art people without the hectic of Moscow. It’s a great place and a great artistic project.
