This weekend is all about donaufestival — Austria’s famous avant-garde event for music, performance, and visual art in Krems. Here’s what we are looking forward to.
Every spring, lovers of electronic music, performance art and surprises meet up in the small city of Krems, Lower Austria, to see what donaufestival has to offer. This year, the slogan Du steckst mich an (which can be translated as ‘You inspire me’ as well as ‘You make me sick’) promises to examine the chances and dangers of empathy. For the first time, the festival was curated by new artistic director Thomas Edlinger.
If you missed out on the first weekend – or simply couldn’t get tickets for the Einstürzende Neubauten concert – be sure to check out some of these highlights this weekend:
In Durational Rope, a performative exploration lasting several hours, the Swedish artist duo QUARTO use a kilometrelong rope to challenge notions of what a body is capable of and how it communicates. For the spooky machine revue In Void, visual artist and theatre-maker Kris Verdonck (A Two Dogs Company) turns the large festival hall into a hounted house.
New event venues like the Dominican Church in the old centre of Krems or Galerie am Eck in Stein, which showcases video works by Vika Kirchenbauer, offer fresh destinations for festival goers.
In the virtual reality movie Hyper-Reality artist Keiichi Matsuda takes you on a digitally augmented tour through the Columbian city of Medellin.
