Alternative art spaces play a decisive role in Southeastern Europe’s contemporary art scene. This year’s special presentation, curated by Adela Demetja, will feature independent institutions from Croatia, Albania, Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia.

This year VIENNAFAIR The New Contemporary will present VIENNA XL (booth A19) for the first time, a platform for the introduction of non-profit, alternative, and artist-run spaces. Institutions from Albania, Georgia, Kosovo, Lithuania, and Serbia will be presented at the fair with the kind support of the Ministry for Education, the Arts and Culture BM:UKK.
I landed in Tirana, the capital city of Albania with 433,000 inhabitants, and was spellbound by its hospitality, pride, and positive attitude. There was ample sunshine, and groups of men were in long conversations about serious issues while standing by their newly acquired luxury cars.
