Early body art and performances, feature films and kinetic sculptures, intimate drawings and poems – Rebecca Horn has been practising her art now for fifty years, during which time she has created her own symbolically charged multifaceted cosmos. Her works make up an expanding web of objects, motifs and themes that she constantly spins anew. In doing so she interweaves numerous traditions of art, literature and film – likewise mythology and the world of fairy tales.

What makes objects and objects memorable? And when do the corresponding memories cease to exist? Do memories even exist, without someone to share them with, without the place to which they belong?

The multi-layered photographic interventions by Vienna-based artist Sophie Thun complicate the relationship between the imaginary space of the image and the real space of the viewer. By revealing the sites, mechanisms, and performances inherent in the production of the image, Thun breaks its seamless illusion, honestly documenting the performance of its construction. In her new exhibition, MERGE LAYERS, the artist creates a superimposition of her previous projects. Featuring the archive of Zenta Dzividzinska, Sophie Thun not only overwrites her own works but also merges the layers of both artists’ past and present.

Tony Cokes’ solo exhibition SM BNGRZ centers around and observes club culture as hubs for celebration of life through love, desire, queerness, music, art, aesthetics and bodies moving. The show questions the potential loss of such hubs through the impossibility of no longer gathering collectively. As a starting point, Cokes takes Rainald Goetz’s RAVE (1998) to examine clubs of the past, the present and the future and hence, its political quality in the creation of subculture, activist movements and political resistance.

ALIENBEES, SAVE US, PLEASE! 🍯 Work of the Czech sculptor, Anna Hulačová, is characterised by a multiplicity of cultural and historical-artistic references. Pieces presented at her exhibition at Arsenal Gallery, Białystok, contain allusions to Greek mythology, science-fiction iconography, Modernism in architecture, Surrealism and Soc-realism. Those works are based on numerous dualisms: utopia vs. dystopia, the past vs. the future, human vs. machine, individuality vs. collectivity, and finally, life vs. death.

Do you already know who will represent Austria in its cultural forums all over the world? 🌍 The first joint call for entries has announced its winners who will now head to 23 destinations around the globe and present artworks reflecting on the upheaval in society and ecology — the main topic of the open call. After being shown abroad, those works will come together in spring 2023 in the form of a group exhibition at the Vienna Künstlerhaus (@kuenstlerhauswien).
